AIDS Relief Effort Arrives in Africa, Finally Meets Orphans

Sometime navigator of the Spirit of Charles Kean flight and advocate for AIDS orphans David Maupin has arrived safely in Nairobi, Kenya. Maupin checked into his hotel last night and has spent today visiting.

Accompanied by Michael Popavero (who will be filming and documenting the Quarters for Kenya AIDS relief efforts), Maupin began the day with a visit to the archbishop of Nairobi. Archbishop Raphael Ndingi Mwana'a Nzeki thanked Maupin and the Rotary Clubs of California for their efforts in saving a generation of children from AIDS infection.

Later, at the Rotary Club of Nairobi, Maupin and Popavero were welcomed and thanked extensively for their support in the fight against AIDS. The Nairobi club even requested the formation of a partnership between itself and the Rotary Club of California.

Finally, the two arrived at their primary destination, the Shepherd’s Home Children’s Sanctuary, where they met 23 girls and one boy who have been orphaned by the AIDS virus. The children greeted the QFK crew with hugs and a welcoming song and dance. All of the kids were curious as to the whereabouts of the Spirit of Charles Kean’s pilot, Ron Maines, so Maupin explained the problems of the flight. The fundraising efforts of Maupin and Quarters for Kenya will bring 250,000 to assist those and other orphans over the next two years.
